🧠Why is Mental Performance Training Often Overlooked?
Mental Performance Training is still not very common today. Many athletes, parents, and coaches focus only on physical skills, while overlooking the mind. Others don’t know what MPT is, or think it’s only for professionals. Here are a few factors that contribute to MPT not being common.
Lack of Awareness
Many coaches, parents, and athletes simply don’t know what MPT is—or they confuse it with therapy or “only for pros.”
Focus on Physical Training Only
Most youth programs prioritize speed, strength, and drills. Mental training is often overlooked or treated as “extra,” not essential.Few Trained Coaches or Specialists
Unlike physical trainers, there aren’t many certified youth mental performance coaches available locally, especially in school or rec sports. It’s Harder to Measure
You can time a sprint or count reps, but it’s not as easy to track growth in confidence, focus, or composure—so it’s not emphasized. And its hard to tell when its needed since its what’s going on behind the scenes in the mind.
But as more people realize that mindset can be the difference between good and great performance, MPT will continue to grow and become an essential part of sports training.
